Born on July 11, 1934, near Golden Ridge, Saskatchewan, Bill was one of seven siblings. From a young age, he exhibited a strong work ethic, a love for his community, and a commitment to helping others—a dedication that would define much of his life. In 1956, Bill moved to High Prairie, Alberta, to work at Ike’s Modern Motors. His career path later led him to the High Prairie School Division, where he served as Fleet and Shop Manager, demonstrating his remarkable skills in management and leadership.
Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to purchase the Esso Service Station in High Prairie, where he served the community for many years. His interactions with locals, farmers, and neighbors showcased not only his professionalism but also his deep care and understanding for people around him. Beyond business, he pursued his passion for agriculture by farming his own piece of paradise in the Gilwood area, where he found joy in the rhythms of rural life and the satisfaction of hard work.
In 1958, Bill met the love of his life, Mary Makara. The couple married and were blessed with three wonderful sons. Family was at the core of Bill’s existence, and he cherished every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and extended family. In his later years, he delighted in spending time at their lake lot at Shaw’s Point, where he enjoyed fishing, laughter, and storytelling with his grandchildren, passing on lessons of life, perseverance, and love for the outdoors.
Bill’s service to his community extended far beyond his career and family life. He served as the longest-standing fire chief of the High Prairie Fire Department, holding the position for an extraordinary 48 years. Under his leadership, the fire department navigated numerous challenging events, including notable fires at local elevators and the Spaulding Hotel, which burned on Christmas Day—an incident that interrupted his holiday dinner but highlighted his steadfast commitment to protecting others. Bill was proud to see his legacy continue, as his grandson followed in his footsteps by joining the Edmonton Fire Department.
